If your child is in therapy at our pediatric practice, you may have noticed they see the same therapist each visit. I’m Jennifer Kelly Reeves, an occupational therapist at Building Futures Pediatric Therapy. Today I’m going to discuss why we feel it’s imperative that children see the same therapist throughout treatment.
Consistency Builds Rapport Between Therapist and Child
For us, it’s important for a child to see the same therapist every time they come in so they can build a rapport.
These young children are often meeting an adult for the first time, and it takes time to build trust. Seeing the same therapist allows your child to learn how to interact with that person and begin to rely on them for the support they need.
Consistency Strengthens the Relationship Between Therapist and Family
It’s important to us that our therapists develop a bond not just with your child, but with your entire family.
Our therapists interact with parents, caregivers, and even grandparents, making sure everyone involved feels included and supported. At Building Futures, it’s important to us as owners and as a team that we walk alongside families throughout their journey. Establishing that relationship is a big reason why we provide the same therapist for every child as often as possible.
If your child is seeing a different therapist each week, it can make it harder to build that connection and maintain consistent progress.
Consistency Builds a Comfortable Routine for Your Child
Having the same therapist also helps your child develop a routine.
When they come to therapy, they know who they’re going to see and what to expect. Instead of facing a new person each time, they feel more comfortable and prepared, which helps them engage more fully in their sessions.
Consistency Promotes Collaboration Between Your Child’s Therapists
At Building Futures, we provide occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy for children. Each discipline supports different areas of development:
- Occupational therapy focuses on feeding, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and fine motor skills
- Physical therapy focuses on gross motor skills, strength, balance, and movement, such as walking, running, and climbing stairs
- Speech therapy focuses on communication, language development, articulation, and oral motor skills
If your child is receiving more than one type of therapy, we make sure they continue working with the same therapists in each area.
This allows therapists to collaborate more effectively, sharing insights and working together as a team. Instead of starting fresh each session, they build on what they already know about your child.
By working together in this consistent way, your child’s therapy team can support their development from every angle.
