Choosing the right therapist for your child is an important decision, and it’s natural to want to know what to expect before getting started.
Hi everyone, I’m Jennifer, an occupational therapist here at Building Futures and one of the owners. I want to talk to you today about what it looks like when you bring your child to us for help.
How Building Futures Approaches Therapy
At Building Futures, we take a whole-child, family-centered approach to therapy. We focus on your child’s ability to interact at home, at school, and in the community, while also supporting your family along the way.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
We Are Committed to Serving Your Family’s Needs
In addition to providing occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, or a combination of services, our staff is highly trained in helping families access the support they may need.
We are well-connected within the community and have many ways to help families get the resources they need. This can include transportation to and from therapy, as well as transportation to other appointments.
We can also assist families with things like completing WIC applications and connecting with other providers, including dentists, dietitians, and ABA services. We collaborate regularly with these providers to help ensure your family is supported from every angle.
We Let Your Child Take the Lead
At Building Futures, we pride ourselves on providing child-led therapy services. This approach allows your child to feel comfortable and engaged during their sessions.
When our therapists are working with your child, they are learning what your child likes and what motivates them. From there, therapy sessions are built around your child’s interests.
For example, your child may choose to play in a specific room, such as the Secret Garden or Dumbo’s Circus. Our therapists are highly trained in following your child’s lead and incorporating therapy goals into their preferred play activities.
We Empower You With Ways to Help Your Child at Home
Another important part of our approach is helping you carry over what your child is working on in therapy into your daily routine at home.
After each session, your therapist will talk with you about your child’s progress, highlight the great things your child accomplished, and provide recommendations and suggestions for activities you can do at home.
This helps reinforce your child’s progress and gives you the tools to continue supporting their development outside of therapy.
We Make Therapy Fun
At Building Futures, we focus on creating an environment that is engaging and exciting for your child. We offer a variety of spaces and play environments, including themed rooms, different types of equipment, and a wide range of toys. This variety makes therapy feel fun and encourages children to actively participate while working toward their goals.
